New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani joined New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch on Thursday, September 17, 2026, for a security briefing ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.
New York City is preparing to welcome a large number of world leaders, diplomats and international delegations, requiring extensive coordination among the NYPD and local, federal and international agencies to protect participants, residents and visitors.
The briefing focused on security preparations around United Nations headquarters and Midtown Manhattan, as well as crowd management, demonstrations, traffic control and the city's ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
Some areas of Manhattan are expected to experience temporary street closures and traffic restrictions because of official motorcades and heightened security measures. City officials have encouraged residents and drivers to plan ahead, use public transportation when possible and follow official travel advisories.
