New York City Mourns Probationary Police Officer Kamir Lou-Barria at Queens Funeral
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch attended the funeral proceedings for Probationary Police Officer Kamir Lou-Barria in Queens on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
Lou-Barria’s family and friends were joined by a large gathering of NYPD officers, recruits and city officials who came to offer their condolences and honor his memory and commitment to public service.
Lou-Barria, 30, died after experiencing a medical emergency and collapsing during a group training run at the NYPD Police Academy on September 7. He had joined the department in April and was at the beginning of a career dedicated to serving New Yorkers. (nypost.com, nypost.com)
During the funeral, Commissioner Tisch spoke about Lou-Barria’s love for his family and his hope of serving the community, emphasizing that his decision to join the police department reflected his desire to help others.
Born in Panama, Lou-Barria moved to the United States in 2014. He studied criminal justice and previously worked for the United States Postal Service before joining the NYPD. He leaves behind his wife, children, relatives and colleagues who mourn his loss.
Police and union officials pledged to continue supporting his family during this difficult time and honored his dedication and decision to pursue a life of public service.
New York City and the NYPD extended their deepest condolences to Lou-Barria’s family and loved ones while recognizing his commitment to serving the city and its residents.
