New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani participated on Friday, September 11, 2026, in a memorial ceremony held at the Postcards Memorial in Staten Island, honoring residents of the borough who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The ceremony brought together victims’ families, local community members and city officials in an observance marked by silence, reflection and the remembrance of the victims’ names and stories. This year’s anniversary coincided with 25 years since the attacks that left a deep mark on New York and the United States. The memorial sits on the Staten Island waterfront, facing the Manhattan skyline and the site of the World Trade Center. The site holds particular significance for residents of the borough, preserving the memory of Staten Islanders who died in the September 11 attacks, as well as one victim of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The observance included symbolic and musical tributes, among them a trumpet performance and a water salute in the harbor, while participants laid flowers and stood before the memorial to remember their loved ones. The view of Manhattan across the water gave the ceremony a poignant resonance, linking the memory of loss with the city’s capacity for solidarity and resilience.

The mayor’s presence underscored the importance of preserving the memory of the victims and standing with their families, while honoring the sacrifices of firefighters, police officers, paramedics and rescue and recovery workers who took part in the response.
